HONDA cb650z
My CB650 arrived in 2001 when a neighbour asked if I'd take it off his hands as it was still in his ex-wife's garage in Shepherds Bush. After a bit of discussion we decided it was on an X plate so was of 1981/2 vintage and he hadn't used it for 4 or five years. We took my tailer up from Shrivenham early one Sunday morning and loaded it up, the tyres were flat and one was covered in brake fluid but other than that the only other thing I noticed was the last tax disc expired in 1985 so the 4 or 5 years was more likely 6 or 7.
The bike had got 12000 miles on the clock and the paperwork he gave me showed it had a 9000 mile service at 6 months old. He'd bought it as a corrier mount so it had the obligatory top box and Rickman fairing fitted from new.
To make it roadworthy I had to strip, clean and rebuild most of it but freeing a stuck piston was the biggest job.
The bike hadn't been running too long before the camchain started making a noise, a quick check showed two plates in the HY-VO chain had failed and trashed the tensioner and slipper as well, this was the bike that was going to solve all the Honda camchain gremlins! Using genuine parts meant a crank out rebuild.
This got the bike to 46,000 miles before the camchain slipper broke in half and allowed the chain to jump the sprockets bending at least 5 valves. By this time, 2006 parts were becoming in short supply so a part complete bike was aquired from ebay and the engine swapped. Unfortunately this engine had problems too as the cam chain noise couldn't be tensioned out and it had a serious oil leak.
A new camchain (rivetable type), genuine head gasket, and a second hand barrel brings the story to the present date.
As an aside, I moved 150 miles to a small village in North Shropshire in 2002, a neighbour walking his dog recognised the DH Motorcycles, Egware Road, London on the bottom of the number plate. The neighbour, Tom Dickie (ex TT racer) was the D half of the dealers. Small world eh?
