CARS

Despite being involved in the automotive industry I'm a bit disheartened by the continual introduction of more and more comfort and safety features which do little but convince the driver he's invincible, increase the mass and reduce the fuel consumption. Don’t get me wrong ABS / ESP etc are fantastic technologies and are great fun for engineers to develop, are 'value added' products for brake manufacturers and following brilliant demonstrations on the TV car programs now help to sell vehicles. But for 99% of the time they are no more use than a pile of bricks just like a spare tyre. Maybe a better way to reduce the 1% remaining risk is to partially remove your foot from the right most pedal?

Well I've had luxury cars, old ones of course, and the repair and maintenance becomes overpowering, the last one was a Citroen XM! If you live outside of Europe you probably don't know Citroen let alone the XM so here's a couple of pictures. Citroen XM Pictures. I've now changed tack and am almost enjoying driving a little diesel Peugeot. I've decided I can live without the electric armrest, seats, windows, mirrors, power steering, ABS, fag lighter, intermittent wipe etc. No, it's not quick but it will break every UK speed limit, I'm told, and I can't get less than 60mpg!

Sorry folks but planes are infinitely more exciting and with a speed limit of 240 knots (275mph) without radar I'm unlikely to have to worry about speed limits for the foreseeable future.

Anyway if your still interested here's some stuff about car maintenance....
