BBC Robotwars Fighting Radio Controlled Robot - Ruf Ruf Dougal

Design Sketches

Having spend 10 plus years as an Automotive Design Engineer it would have been very easy for me to sit down at a tube and design a robot from scratch.

-so why didn’t I???

If you draw a component you then have to make it!!! Given a non existent budget for 'Ruf Ruf Dougal' I decided to scrounge all or any bits that might be suitable and try to fit them together.
I fixed the basic structure and ideas and modified the design to suit the parts available. I have attached some of the concept sketches for you to check out but please bear in mind the finished design should look like the Dougal you used to watch as a kid (or saw on the McDonald's boxes if you're a bit younger)!

Some ideas were kept a secret until after the fighting to prevent the competition copying. How many actually found it to the arena?

This shows the basic idea, it is Dougal, but his little red tongue has been replaced by a nasty stabbing weapon. This shows the basic idea, it is Dougal, but his little red tongue has been replaced by a nasty stabbing weapon.

This shows the weapon is driven by a flywheel rather than the usual pneumatics or hydraulics. This shows the weapon is driven by a flywheel rather than the usual pneumatics or hydraulics.

The body fixing method is secret for now. The body fixing method is secret for now.

A big car wheel is the source of the flywheel. The bigger and heavier the better. A big car wheel is the source of the flywheel. The bigger and heavier the better.

The drive wheels will be made of a secret material and the front / rear castors will be sprung to maintain contact on uneven floors. The drive wheels will be made of a secret material and the front / rear castors will be sprung to maintain contact on uneven floors.

'Axios' which was built in my village, took part in RW series 3 and lost to 'Panic Attack' because its weapon couldn't get low enough. I don't want to repeat the same mistake.
